AK 47 Kit
Well, I decided I needed a 7.62x39.......after looking at the prices for the cheap AK's, I decided that getting my machinist friend to help build this thing would get me a better AK for less........so here we go. I got the Romanian kit friday and it looks pretty good. Of course the reciever was torched out. But the barrel looks clean and pretty good. The parts need to be sandblasted to the metal and milled to taked off the rough edges and re-parkerized. Need to get a new receiver or a "flat" and a bending jig, then heat treat the reciever. (parkerize and epoxy coat all exterior parts).......polish the action.....a few other operations and add new poly furniture, folding stock ( a good folding stock is the most expensive part).......If I buy the reciever (serial #) I'll save about $200.00 but it will be registered. Making one out of flats would be more interesting but my friend might not want to do that. In any case I could get a really nice AK for under $500.00........

Tapco trigger...sweeet. Web I will put an ATI Fiberforce stock on it and a Krink flash hider. Total outlay $350. Thing shoots like amazing.

zipgraver- 05-21-2007

Yep I understand about both...the gun dealers being jerks about transfers and hacking away at your own guns....I've done that too. Our one bigger dealer here in Fernley sells the same exact WASR for $419.00 without mods of any kind. That means he makes at least $134.00 profit on each AK. Not bad if you can get it. I bought two of them and transfered one to my shooting buddy no charge. :P Range report....well I've onl'y had time to shoot a few rounds out of it but let me tell you the first round ever with the canted factory sight and all...I had never fired an AK before... I hit the bottom of a bowling pin at about 60 yards and made the pin dance. I could only say WHOA! Only problem was the damn little pointy butt stock kept spearing me in the shoulder....it must be made for a midget.... that's why the new stock. Looks kind of like a Choate skeleton stock... like I have on my H&R. Maybe since it's made here it will fit a REAL American  :P

Another thought just came to mind. For the money I'm spending on the AK, I could be upgrading my OlyArms carbine with the new piston gas system and for reliability and Magpul calapsible stock...........chrome barrel, piston recoil system. ....................thousand rounds or wolf ammo....... ...........NAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not quite.........

Don't forget ODC, he can get you any parts for the AK at great prices.

zipgraver- 05-21-2007

Oh yeah I forgot about ODC too... :?

Dave- 05-26-2007

I got my Romy kit from ODC. I dont know much about these, but from what I have read and seen, this one seems to be in better condition than what a lot of people are getting from other sources. I also picked up a few flats, and a bending jig is next on the list. If you are wanting to save money, I would recomend getting a 100% receiver and passing on the flats. You could probably get two receivers ready to go for the price of two flats and a jig. I am going the jig route because I like to tinker with things. Keep us posted on your progress. I am still collecting parts/ tools, but I should be starting a couple builds by the end of the summer. I am in the process of moving, so I dont have the time to play too much right now.

I'm still in the process of finding an FFL to get the d---- receiver....... I started taking it apart and cleaned up the barrel a bit. Bought 1000 rounds of Wolf food for it...................the price has doubled since last year........ :!:

Bought 1000 rounds of Wolf food for it...................the price has doubled since last year........ :!: I have never done it, but I know a lot of people use pawn shops for FFL transfers. I wouldnt think one would have a problem with a receiver transfer. Wolf is all I have shot through my other AK. At 17 cents a round its not too expensive. I did miss out on the $80 cases people talk about.

Ordnance Direct Company- 05-28-2007

I'm back!!! Hey Dave, glad you like the kit, thanks for the mention! AK's are fun kits to build. I've done both from a registered receiver, and a flat, and really, the flat receiver build turned out better. I used an Ohio Ordnance Works receiver, cost $60 and shipping/transfer/tax, and is a good receiver to use. Then, bought a bending jig, and bent out a Tapco type flat, and it worked really good too. The Tapco style flats have the true Russian trigger pin hole placement, which is lower than the OOW receivers, so the triggers set better in the receiver in the end. Either way, it works out better than I thought it would. I used a 'screw' type build, where you thread the trunions, but the next one I do will be a complete weld job, lots quicker, I think. Kits are drying up, so if anybody is thinking of a build, get one now. I'm having a HARD time getting any more in descent shape.

zen4- 06-20-2007

Started de-milling the old reciever and trigger rivets.......getting excited at the prospect. Got my first 1000 rounds today.....I like the size of this cartridge. Got some mags from ODC........a a rivet set........Almost time to turn it over to the machinist to do his thing and think about the kind of finish to put on it.............Probably will get another kit for the distant future and hope Hilary isn't elected...........

Dave- 06-26-2007

I got my kit demilled, the flat bent, and the front trunion/ trigger guard spacing set. By far the hardest part so far was pressing out the barrel pin. The first two jigs bent/ broke. The third one got it, but was still a pain. I ended up building my own bending jig...it works, but I doubt it would survive mass production. I already have a couple other kits stashed away.
