Re: Lions, Tigers, Bears oh my......
What caliber and type of ammo do you pack for camping and hiking? origin= I was watching the Aizona hiker accused of second degree murder case and the prosecuting arguement of "10mm hollow point" being a cold blooded killer choice of ammunition. And the 10mm being "more powerful" than what Police agencies use. Considering he was hiking in the woods I think 10mm would be the suitable chioce Well, I guess I am a cold blooded killer..... As a general rule I have a 10mm with HPs on or about my person at all times. I may live "way down south" where the deer are the size of dogs and the bears are few, far between, and small too, but the boars are evil SOB's (and they are aplenty). I didn't see the show, nor am I familiar with the story, but it looks like I am screwed if I ever "have to" shoot. I will say this, it won't affect my choice of caliber or ammo. Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

When I go out with the Scouts I always carry my 23 with 165 gr. Gold dots. The frangible rounds I dont think I would want to hit a bear with,,I never shot them to see what they get for penitration on a bear type target. Here we have alot of bear but almost 30yrs with the Scouts I only had trouble with one bear and it was'nt really a problem. She wanted into our camp site and I scared her off once and she came right back. I ran her off the second time and 30 minutes later she was back so 2 of us ran her off a 3rd time and we took the Scouts out of the area. I figured she was old and just wanted an easy meal but I did'nt want one of the boys to get up during the night and run into her. He might not be so lucky,, Now Conservation has released mountain lions into the adirondack mountains so there is another small problem. They said for years they never did release any but there was always the rumor. Last summer my son went to a car mountain lion collision. Now they have posted signs up they are released in the area.
